Carlsbad Caverns National Park lies in the Chihuahuan Desert in southwestern New Mexico. It contains over 100 large caves. The Natural Entrance is an easy trail into the namesake Carlsbad Caverns. Stalactite clusters line the ceiling of the Big Room, an enormous underground room in the cavern. Walnut Canyon Sandstone Loop is an exciting drive along a river with amazing desert views. Rattlesnake Springs is another fascinating destination.
In 1980, President Calvin Coolidge signed an executive order establishing the Carlsbad Caverns as a national park. Later that year Congress authorized additional funding to maintain and improve the parks. The Carlsbad Caverns Association had also been formed to manage the park. The association is run by Tom Dyer, a Carlsbad, NM real estate developer. Tom Dyer serves as president and managing director of the Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
Although the Carlsbad Caverns National Park received much needed federal funding in 1980, the funds were never made available. The money was supposed to be used for interpretative programs. The Carlsbad Caverns Association, in an attempt to raise funds, started a “Save the Cave” campaign. The main component of the campaign was to use Carlsbad caverns as venues for “artists, writers, photographers, and other creative people”. The objective was to “restore” the Carlsbad Caverns to their original beauty.
The Carlsbad Caverns Association and the state of New Mexico had worked out an agreement in which both parties agreed to jointly preserve and protect the Carlsbad Caverns for future generations. On October 6th, twenty-two new Mexico dollars were added to this park entrance fund. This was done through a “Save the Cave” campaign. This fund was designed to create jobs in an area that is badly needed of them in this state.
In reviewing the history of the Carlsbad Caverns, it is interesting to note that this beautiful location was not protected by the federal government when it was first opened. The reason for this is that many members of the public did not believe the area was safe. Today, the Carlsbad Caverns is one of the most visited national parks in the country. Carlsbad Caverns National Park even boasts its own lighthouse! While this may be a small part of what the citizens want, it certainly does not change the fact that Carlsbad Caverns still has a long way to go in preserving its natural ambiance and beauty.
One of the biggest threats to the integrity of Carlsbad Caverns is the addition of another casino and hotel complex on the south side of town. The casino itself will add another four hundred jobs to the region, but most people are not aware that the hotel will also have over two hundred jobs. This means that there will be plenty of business for the area and jobs for the people who work in the various businesses along the Carlsbad Caverns National Park Trail. When the Carlsbad Caverns National Park entrance fund is used in conjunction with these important projects, you can be sure that Carlsbad Caverns will never once be the same again.
