Most people are familiar with the famous North Rim, but the Grand Canyon South Rim is equally as amazing. For a more authentic experience, hike to the Hermit Trail, a short trail in the Grand Canyon built in 1911. You must use the shuttle between March 1 and November 30. If you are driving to the park, you can do it at any time. However, you must plan your trip well in advance so that you can avoid rush hour traffic.
Using the south entrance, you will first arrive at the Grand Canyon Village. The Village is also the starting point for special tours such as horseback riding and helicopter tours. You can also hike along the Bright Angel Trail, South Kaibab Trail, and Rim Trail. There are several overlooks around the Village. Depending on the season, you may also take the Canyon Train. It is the fastest way to get to the South Rim, as it only takes about an hour and a half.
The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is a must-see if you are visiting the park. Besides the canyon, it is also home to many viewpoints that offer breathtaking views. To capture these magnificent vistas, most tourists bring their cameras with them. You can also take a look at some of the magnificent works of architecture on the South Rim, including the Lookout Studio. Designed by famed architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, the studio offers a unique perspective on the Grand, and is one of the most popular places to go to see the canyon.
You can drive through the south rim of the Grand Canyon in an hour. A shuttle bus will take you to Yaki Point, which is closed to private cars and overcrowding. If you’d prefer to walk, you can also go to Desert View, a high promontory near the east entrance station. It offers panoramic views of the Grand Canyon. From here, you can also take the Painted Desert. There are many other sites to see in the South Rim.
You can purchase a pre-paid Grand Canyon pass if you want to get into the park faster. If you’d like to see the canyon up close, there are also tours that are available from the visitor center. In addition, you can visit the Grand Canyon South Rim’s Market Plaza. It’s located just two miles south of the North Rim. Parking is available for private vehicles, RVs, and tour buses.
If you’re driving to the Grand Canyon from the north, you’ll find a train station near the south rim. You can also take a train to the West Rim. Then, head toward the south entrance. You’ll pass the visitor center and the Market Plaza. You’ll see the famous Grand Canyon airport. Then, you’ll want to explore the park itself. You can walk to the top of the rim.
The weather at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim can vary greatly depending on the time of year. Here’s an overview of what you can expect:
- Spring (March to May): Temperatures can range from the mid-30s Fahrenheit at night to the mid-60s during the day. There may be occasional rain showers.
- Summer (June to August): Expect hot and dry conditions with daytime temperatures in the 80s to 90s Fahrenheit. Thunderstorms are common, especially in July and August.
- Fall (September to November): Temperatures start to cool down, ranging from the 20s to the 50s Fahrenheit at night and 50s to 70s during the day. October is generally a dry month.
- Winter (December to February): Temperatures can drop below freezing at night and range from the 20s to the 40s Fahrenheit during the day. Snow and ice are possible, but not guaranteed.
It’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast before your trip and pack accordingly, especially if you plan to hike or spend a lot of time outdoors.
