The dormant grandeur of a volcano like active Puakea Volcano in Oahu or active Hilina Volcano in island of Hawaii certainly enthralls thousands of travelers and seekers of new sceneries every year. These grandeur volcanoes are certainly beautiful to behold and provide an ideal backdrop to explore. However, these sights are just what make Hawaii a perfect vacation spot for many people. In addition to the scenic views of the volcanoes, Hawaii offers a lot of other activities that are sure to entice the heart of a vacationer.
The Kilauea Volcano, the second-most active volcano at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is also among the top most-visited destinations in Hawaii and is visited by millions of foreign tourists every year. This makes it the second-most visited tourist attraction in Hawaii and the second-most visited volcano in the entire world. It has four active volcanoes: Wailua, Mauna Loa, Na Pali and Wakaoe. Among the four, Wailua is the largest of them all at 53 acres. Wailua’s four sides are surrounded by lush rainforests of leaved ochre and dense vegetation, which provides a very special environment for a volcano visit.
While all the volcanoes are very stunning, the active volcano at the base of Wailua is the one that poses the biggest fascination to many travelers and visitors. The active volcano is also called “the Sleeping Giant” because, during every year, it hibernated while the rest of the volcanoes spewed out their lava and erupted again. This natural phenomenon is a very fascinating sight to behold. If you want to be one of those who can savor the scene at this active volcano, you will need to schedule your trip to Hawaii sometime between February and March, or better still book your trip as soon as possible.
Another famous active volcano is the caldera of Oahu at the southern tip of Hawaii. The caldera measures about five to six miles in diameter and is filled with lava. The most popular hiking destination near Oahu’s caldera is the Wailua River Canyon, which is also about three miles long. You can also do some river rafting trips in Hanauma Bay and the Big Island. If you want to be a part of the beautiful scenery and serene atmosphere near Oahu’s caldera, then you should book a tour to the national park that surrounds it.
While all the main Hawaiian volcanoes are wonderful sights to see, perhaps the most interesting of them all is the dormant grand kahala loa, or “colossos.” At a very high altitude, the kahala loa is actually a flower garden of pink flowers that only blooms for a few months each year. Its flowers open up just before the start of summer, and then close again just before fall. During this short period, thousands of bird lovers and even skiers visit the lovely flowerbeds and its colorful plumas. Although it is not visible to visitors like the other great volcanoes, you should make it a point to visit the kahala loa in order to get a closer look at the unique Hawaiian flora.
All in all, there are many activities to take part in when visiting Hawaii. You don’t have to simply laze around on the beach or lie on a blanket in a hammock while listening to live music. There is a lot to do in Hawaii, especially if you know how to look for the active volcanoes and view the wonderful landscape that inspired the artists that brought us “Polynesian” art and culture.
